A Common But Frustrating Situation

Moving comes with its inevitable let-downs. Your friend bails on helping you pack at the last moment, or your landlord charges you an additional cleaning fee.

But when you’re paying good money to a professional company to treat your valuables with care, you should be able to expect your furniture to arrive in one piece, right? Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. But what can you do when the movers you hired chipped your grandmother’s antique wardrobe?

The good news is that while this situation is overwhelming, it’s not the end of the world. All moving companies here in the US are required by law to offer two different insurance options, which are usually called Full Value Protection and Released Value Protection.

Full Value Protection typically offers liability for up to $100.00 per pound of extraordinary value cargo. While this option covers more expensive items, it’s usually the more expensive liability plan for the consumer.

Released Value Protection typically offers liability for up to .60 cents per article. While this is typically the least expensive option (usually completely free to the consumer) of the two, it also means that you’d likely be getting less than 1% of the broken item’s value as a liability.

As with any legal situation, it’s important to make sure you carefully read through all paperwork to make sure you understand who’s liable for what before an incident occurs.

Weighing Your Options

If you find yourself in a situation where you’re getting taken advantage of, there are measures you can take to make sure you’re getting compensated fairly for your damaged possessions.

First, make sure you document the damage itself. Take pictures of the damage, document correspondence with the moving service, and make note of delivery and pick-up times.

When you have all of the necessary documentation, file a claim with the moving company within nine months of the incident. If you are unhappy with your compensation, or the moving company has not responded by thirty days, take action by contacting the Better Business Bureau. If all other options have been exhausted, you have the option of taking the incident to small claims court.
